Welcome to the Africa Partnership Forum website

First Joint Statement on Co-operation signed between UNECA and OECD

Signing of Joint Statement by Mr Richard Boucher, OECD (left), and Mr Abdoulie Janneh, UNECA (right)

A Joint Statement on Cooperation between UNECA and OECD was signed by UNECA Executive Secretary Abdoulie Janneh and OECD Deputy Secretary-General Richard Boucher in Paris on Friday, 11th June. The Joint Statement expands cooperation to a number of priority policy areas for the two organizations and will facilitate staff development initiatives and exchanges.

The two organizations already collaborate on several activities such as the annual African Economic Outlook (also prepared with the African Development Bank).

A close working relationship has been built between the Africa Partnership Forum (APF) Support Unit (hosted at the OECD) and UNECA, who jointly produce regular reports monitoring the delivery of commitments by Africa and its development partners – the Mutual Review of Development Effectiveness (MRDE).  The 2010 MRDE will focus on attainment of the MDGs in Africa and will feed into the MDG Review Summit at the UN in September 2010.

14th Africa Partnership Forum, 29-30 April, Toronto, Canada

The 14th APF was hosted by the Canadian government in Toronto on 29-30 April 2010 following the G8 Development Ministers meeting. The Forum opened with an update on the issues and outcomes of key recent and forthcoming meetings concerning Africa’s development, including the 14th AU Summit, the AU/ECA Finance Ministers meeting held in Malawi, the forthcoming G8 Development ministers meeting, and the G8 and G20 Summits.

Forum participants then discussed key concerns for Africa in the run up to the MDG Review Summit to be held in New York this September.  The focus was on achieving the Health MDGs - specifically maternal and child health. Discussions concentrated on the impact of the financial and economic crisis on health and reviewed innovative financing, innovative partnerships and science and technology for health. The next session covered MDG 1 and addressed food insecurity in Africa, looking at the impact of the crisis on food security, projected world market conditions and innovative financing, innovative partnerships and science and technology for food security. The final session of the Forum discussed Regional Partnerships and regional integration in Africa, including the roles of AU/NEPAD and the RECs. The session specifically focussed on: economic integration, peace and security and how Development Partners can best support these.   Meeting documents

The Joint Statement produced at the Forum will inform the forthcoming G8 and G20 fora and feed into the process leading up to the UN MDG Review Summit in September 2010.

Mutual Review of Development Effectiveness in Africa Report 2009:  Promise & Performance

The Mutual Review of Development Effectiveness in Africa Report 2009 is both an exercise in 'mutual accountability'- assessing what has been done to deliver commitments, and a review of 'development effectiveness'- assessing what results have been achieved. It is also intended to be of practical use of political leaders in looking forward to the key policy challenges ahead.

The review has been undertaken jointly by task teams from UNECA and OECD, in close consultation with the NEPAD Secretariat, and with inputs from African and international institutions and civil society.
